PORTAGE, MI -- Simar Bhatia, a senior at Portage Central High School, was waiting in class after a final exam when she learned she was a 2023 Presidential Scholar -- one of only two in Michigan. The U.S. Department of Education gives the distinction to up to 161 graduating high school students based on academic or artistic achievement. Bhatia joins the 59th class of scholars since the recognitions creation in 1979. 'I checked my email and I just scream ‘Oh my God, oh my God' and I just hug (my friend).
