The Portage Department of Parks and Recreation received more reports of dogs off of their leash within the past year compared to previous years, according to a news release. The city of Portage is reminding park users about the Michigan law that states it is unlawful "for any owner to allow any dog to stray unless properly leashed," according to park staff. A rule in place by the Portage Parks and Recreation requires all dogs to be on a six foot or retractable leash in all Portage Parks. For owners who would like to let their dog off a leash, the South Westnedge Dog Park is open year-round, according to the city of Portage.
